I’m almost positive the word ratchet, when used to describe something that is disgustingly out of sorts, was originally a mispronunciation and subsequent misunderstanding of that pronunciation from an “originator” or “originator(s)” who actually just meant wretched.
I have no evidence to offer that could back this up in any way, but I have heard enough spoken accents and have enough of an understanding of how bad people can be at spelling to have a synergistically high degree of certainty about how likely a possibility this is.
